Intermodal Planning for the Space Coast TPO involves providing transportation choices and connections between air, sea, space, rail and roads. Many times, intermodal transportation is focused on the transport of goods and services between more than one mode. However, in Brevard County, Intermodal Planning also includes the safe and efficient movement of people, using more than one mode of transportation. Current planning efforts are focusing on the opportunity to integrate passenger rail as another option. A passenger rail station would serve as an intermodal hub for connecting to other modes such as the airport, seaport or spaceport, or using another form of transportation to reach a final destination (bus, bicycle, sidewalk, rideshare, etc.).

2016 SCTPO Passenger Rail Station Location Study

In 2016, the Space Coast TPO conducted a passenger rail study in response to the prospect that passenger rail services may return to Brevard via Brightline, a new private endeavor to provide higher speed passenger train service between Miami and Orlando. This was determined to be an opportunity to advance the County’s public transportation vision, as described in the TPO’s adopted 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan, and support the region’s economy and tourism industries. The TPO has been encouraging Brightline to add a station in Brevard County upon the start up of service between Orlando and West Palm.
