Rail Safety on the Space Coast
As Brightline's high-speed rail service has arrived in Brevard County, everyone needs to understand and follow rail safety rules. High-speed trains move very fast, and not following safety rules can lead to dangerous situations.
High Speed Trains
High-speed trains (such as Brightline) travel much faster than regular trains. This means they can be hard to see and hear until they are very close. It's important to follow all the rules of the road around train tracks:
- Never Go Around Safety Gates: Safety gates are there to protect you. Never drive or walk around them, even if you think you have time. Trains can come very quickly.
- Stay Off the Tracks: Always stay off the railway tracks. Walking or playing on the tracks is extremely dangerous.
- Look and Listen: Always look and listen for trains before crossing the tracks. Trains can come from either direction.
- Use Designated Crossings: Only cross the tracks at designated crossings. These areas are marked for safe crossing.
- Obey All Signs and Signals: Pay attention to all warning signs and signals around the tracks. They are there to keep you safe.
- Report Issues: Every crossing is equipped with a blue-and-white Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign at the grade crossing. If you notice an issue (such as the safety gates malfunctioning), call for help! Use Call the railroad’s emergency contact number listed on the ENS sign. Communicate your location by providing the identification number and state the nature of the emergency to the dispatcher.
What To Do If Your Car Gets Stuck
If your car gets stuck on the tracks:
- Get out of the car immediately.
- Move away from the tracks.
- Call 911 and report the situation.
Teaching Children About Rail Safety
Start a culture of safety early by teaching your children and teens about the importance of staying safe around railroad tracks and crossings!
- Teach them never to play near tracks.
- Remind them to always look and listen for trains.
- Show them where the safe crossing areas are.
Here are some fun resources you can use to educate kids about train safety:
- Train Track Trivia Game (ages 11+)
- Operation Lifesaver: See Tracks? Think Train! Activity Book (Ages 8 – 11)
- Operation Lifesaver: See Tracks? Think Train! Coloring Book (Ages 4 – 7)
