With Brevard continuing to have a high number of crashes, especially involving vulnerable road users, a new initiative is being developed to fundamentally change how everyone thinks about traffic safety. That initiative is Vision Zero, a goal of having zero fatalities and serious injuries on our roadways.  The first step in reaching this goal is to develop a Vision Zero Action Plan.

Vision Zero acknowledges that many factors contribute to safe mobility — including roadway design, speeds, behaviors, technology, and policies — and sets clear goals to achieve the shared goal of zero fatalities and severe injuries (Vision Zero Network).

To put Brevard on the road to zero and to create the Action Plan, the SCTPO  assembled a task force comprised of representatives from diverse backgrounds and made up from different agencies and citizens throughout the county. The task force held their first workshop on September 25, 2019 where they discussed the challenges and opportunities within Brevard County. There are four emphasis areas the task force is comprised of: Engineering, Education, Enforcement and Equity. Together, the members will help identify what tools and programs can be implemented and included in the Action Plan that gets Brevard headed towards zero deaths and serious injuries.
