Wickham Road Operational Analysis

Contact: Laura Carter

Project Status: Completed, March 2018

Study Purpose: The Wickham Road Operational Analysis was conducted to evaluate and identify multi-modal solutions to facilitate pedestrian/bicycle/transit movement along the corridor and to address congestion and safety issues.

Study Limits: Eau Gallie Boulevard to Lake Washington, Melbourne

Summary of Results:

Short Term (1-2 years):
1. Improve pedestrian crosswalks at Aurora Road and Lake Washington intersections. Improvements include crosswalk for all four legs of intersections. Status: Both intersections need funding for design and construction. Working with Brevard County and City of Melbourne to get programmed within next one to two years.

2. Florida Department of Transportation is reviewing minor safety improvements for intersection at Eau Gallie Blvd. The Community Traffic Safety Team submitted application for additional signage regarding pedestrian crossings.

Mid Term (3-10 years):
Full intersection improvements that address additional turn lanes and traffic operations at Eau Gallie, Aurora and Lake Washington were added to Space Coast TPO’s project priority list. Eau Gallie Blvd. next phase is purchasing of Right-of-Way. Aurora Road and Lake Washington next phases will be Design.

Long Term (10+ years):
The long term vision for the corridor includes adding sidewalk on west side of roadway, bicycle lanes, access management (directional medians), and addition of a new traffic signal near Lansing Ridge. Wickham Road is maintained by Brevard County and if the County desires to fund the implementation of the vision using Federal and/or State funds, they will need to request the corridor be placed on the TPO’s project priority list. The project will need funding for three phases, Design, Right-of-Way and then Construction. Each phase can take a few years to complete.
