Pineda Causeway is one of three test sites chosen by FDOT to introduce bicycles onto limited access roadways. FDOT consultants met with local bicycle groups and residents to address safety concerns for the interaction of motorists and bicyclists.
Upgrades along the Causeway include designated bike lanes, higher bridge railings, and “green lanes” – green markings on the road that alert drivers merging onto the Causeway of the potential presence of bicyclists.
Data from this project was used to compile recommendations in a report to the Governor, Senate President, and Speaker of the House in the fall of 2015.
The final report recommends an extension of the pilot project for another two years to 2017.
